Interoperability Profile

In short: An interoperability profile is the technical unit of conformance declaration used by a system to claim conformance to the EHDS. An interoperability profile specifies a combination of a system role (producer, consumer, exchanger), one or more EEHRxF logical data models, and the exchange methodology for the data (e.g. document or resource based exchanges). Systems claim conformance to one or more interoperability profiles.

There are three main categories of interoperability profiles:

1. Harmonised Components Profiles: Define system-level obligations related to the two harmonized EHR components (interoperability and logging).
2. Metadata Interoperability Profiles: Establish the mandatory metadata (Provenance data) baseline (e.g., authorship, timestamps, and patient identification) for all exchanges.
3. EEHRxF-aligned EHR Interoperability Profiles (documented in terms of logical models).
   • Broadly-scoped interoperability profiles: full data sets in support of priority categories like patient summary, laboratory results, and discharge reports. Systems that offer broad support data in such categories may claim conformance to such interoperability profiles.
   • Narrowly-scoped interoperability profiles: individual logical models which each constitute part of the data exchanged in a priority category. Systems which only offer partial support for data in a priority category may claim conformance to such interoperability profiles. This is intended to ensure a system is only held accountable for the data and functions it actually supports.

Systems that claim conformance to broadly-scoped interoperability profiles may also claim conformance to one or more of the narrowly-scoped interoperability profiles which (in terms of data / logical models) form part of the broadly-scoped interoperability profile.
