Categories of personal electronic health data to be accessed and exchanged for primary use

In short: The scope of the EHDS requirements is limited to a set of prioritised categories of health data. The list of priority categories will expand over time and may be changed by the EU commisson at any point in time.

The EHDS defines six priority categories of data for primary exchange. The list of categories can be changed at any point in time by a delegated act. Article 14 defines the following priority categories:

• (a) patient summaries;
• (b) electronic prescriptions;
• (c) electronic dispensations;
• (d) medical imaging studies and related imaging reports;
• (e) medical test results, including laboratory and other diagnostic results and related reports; and
• (f) discharge reports.

Article 105 specifies the date when support for these priority categories is required: 26 March 2029 for categories (a), (b) and (c); 28 march 2031 for (d), (e) and (f).

EHDS empowers the EU Comission to make changes to the list of priority categories at any point in time by means of a Delegated Act (Article 14(2)). There will be a minimum 1-year lead time between the decision to add a new priority category and the initial date when support ahs to be implemented.
