New EHDS-on-FHIR training coursePublication date: Oct 26, 2025
We'll be adding a new EHDS-on-FHIR training course to our portfolio, in aid of implementers preparing for the impact of this EU regulation.
EHDS-on-FHIR training courseToday, with more than 3 years to go before the initial Electronic Health Data Space (EHDS) requirements have to be met by almost all healthcare applications, we're announcing a new training course: EHDS-on-FHIR, delivery of which will start Q2 2026. One of the main reasons for creating this course is the high level of uncertainty amongst implementers regarding the effects of this regulations. Sure, we've probably all seen or heard high level presentations about EHDS, with lots of vague statements, 100s of unknown project logos and a lack of information relevant to those with an IT background. It's very easy to get lost in the weeds. This course is explicitly aimed at implementers and architects who work for software companies, healthcare providers, and those who work for organizations that support national Healthcare data exchange infrastructures. The course aims to answer the 'What does the EHDS mean for me, in practice?' question. Why now? After all, 3 years is a loooong time. Actually, large it vendors and national Healthcare it bodies are getting ready right now, modifying architectures and software, training of IT and of healthcare professionals takes time. In 2023, the Danish goverment comissioned Deloitte to create a preliminary cost estimate of the implementation of the EHDS. The total cost estimate for the Danish health system was estimated to be between 164 and 999 million Euro; exclusive of any investments software vendors will have to make. Denmark has a population of 6 million citizens, so you can do the math (well, sort of) when it comes to the 450 million citizens of the EU and the EEA. This'll require a significant effort by a lot of parties. Large organizations already have dedicated people who are preparing for the EHDS. Smaller organizations won't have the capacity nor the money to do so. That's where this course comes in, as it provides a solid overview of the impact of the EHDS. Those in the know about EHDS will be aware that we actually don't know some of the implementation details at this point in time: we're waiting for some of the implementing acts associated with the EHDS to be published in 2026. However, based on expert analysis, surveys amongst the EU member states as well as information leaked by sources close to the EU commission enable us to cover the expected outcomes. We'll be updating the training materials as time progresses to reflect the latest thinking about its impact. EHDS: more than FHIRWithin the IHE and HL7 communities the focus has mostly been on the data format used for the mandatory interoperability and logging components. This so-called eEHRxF format consists of a couple of fhir implemention guides. Sure, we'll cover these, but there's a lot more to the EHDS than just a data format. Think of patient data access rights, access control or its impact on existing national healthcare data exchange networks. Earlier this year some of our resellers/partners started asking for a training course like this. Right now we've solely discussed a partnership with HL7 Netherlands, we expect other partners to have an interest as well. A few in-company training courses will be held Q1 2026, to help mature the quality of the training course. Delivery in the form of open registration courses will start Q2 next year. See this page for a list of training dates. A detailed description of the training course, its learning goals and the agenda can be found here. I hope to meet you during this course should you have a need to catch up on the EHDS, or on its impact on software implementations. -Rene PermaLink to this page: https://www.ringholm.com/column/announcing-ehds-on-fhir-training-course.htm
